What’s in a name? For Nelson Mandela University, the only higher education institution in the world to carry the name of former President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, it means a commitment to the great statesman’s values – and more.

All unnamed buildings within each of the seven faculties are part of the present focus of the Naming and Renaming project aimed at building an inclusive institutional culture that resonates with the values of Nelson Mandela.

On 27 May 2019, our Vice-Chancellor officially launched the Naming and Renaming project and announced new names for eight of the Port Elizabeth student residences.

‘The decision to become Nelson Mandela University is not simply an exercise in corporate re-branding.  It is a statement of intent. It is a statement of values. It is a validation of the struggles of our people against colonial occupation and apartheid oppression. It is an affirmation of their history and identity, of their dignity and rights.’

The Naming and Renaming Project to ensure that all University spaces and places recognise, respect and honour all people and our country’s rich heritage in ways that resonate with our values and the ethos of our namesake will be officially launched on 27 May.

A new Naming and Renaming website to support the opportunity that the Naming and Renaming  process will offer us in terms of building social cohesion and enhancing the intellectual identity and brand of Nelson Mandela University, is now live.

The Naming and Renaming project to ensure that all University spaces and places recognise, respect and honour all people and our country’s rich heritage in ways that resonate with our values and the ethos of our namesake will be launched later this month.

A roll-out plan to support the University’s new Naming and Renaming project is in place, inclusive of supporting documentation and steps to be followed in the naming or renaming approval (see attachments and below).

Our students have taken the lead in building a more inclusive institutional culture for Nelson Mandela University as part of the Naming and Renaming Project by submitting a list of new names for their residences following a series of consultative processes in Port Elizabeth.
