A roll-out plan to support the University’s new Naming and Renaming project is in place, inclusive of supporting documentation and steps to be followed in the naming or renaming approval (see attachments and below).

The naming and renaming project is aimed at building an inclusive institutional culture that also contributes to transformation and will continue to build the Mandela brand, particularly in the centenary year.

Consultative processes are either underway or soon will be. Late last year, for example, the SRC led a consultation process around the naming of student residences in Port Elizabeth (as shared in a previous Memo).

Phased approach

Given the magnitude and complexities of the project across multiple campuses, a phased approach is being taken focusing on different precincts and led by working groups of relevant stakeholder representatives.

Term one

This term, the focus will be on the following:

  • Bird Street Campus
  • Various buildings across multiple campuses, but particularly those that do not yet have a name, such as the “new new Engineering building”

The naming process is guided by a number of documents.

Supporting documentation

A Naming Policy complete with guiding principles and naming criteria as well as a Naming and Renaming Development Plan are in place to support implementation of the roll-out plan.

Naming criteria

It includes, for example, criteria guiding the choice of names:

  • Names should redress imbalances of the past and seek to honour local people and the history of the area
  • Choose names of those who have contributed significantly to advance the cause of all South Africans
  • Consider places of significance and meaning; significant moments or events in our history; geographical features, indigenous flora or fauna and names that are in lines with strategic priorities, vision, mission and values
  • Names should serve to build social cohesion and inspire present and future generations
  • The primary users of a building or space should be given the opportunity to provide input on its name

Consultation process

Within each area/precinct a naming working group involving relevant stakeholder representatives (e.g. students, staff, alumni) is established. After consultation and agreement the working group can recommend names for the identified buildings and / or spaces along with a detailed motivation to the Naming and Renaming sub-committee of the Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee (ACHC).

If acceptable, and in line with the naming criteria, the recommendations will go to Manco for approval consideration.

Website

To support the consultation process further and in ensuring transparency, the University is developing a website where all supporting documentation is in place.
